Yes, I think our group did a good job during the drama. Our acting was better than some others too I think, but, never mind, the important thing here is that we had great Fun and I'm sure there were some things that we learnt too.

My opinion on my listening experience

‘WICKED’

Wicked? What is it about? It is same meaning like a wish? May be. No! It not likes that. It’s different between both of them. That is my first impression about this topic when I opened this web site. I felt that the topic was told about something weird. But it’s wrong. It not likes that. It told me that wicked means:

Intensely or extremely bad or unpleasant in degree or quality

So, my first impression is wrong. That’s why don’t judge someone by its cover.

Normally, as usual as I am, when I listen to the communicator in there, I’m still having the same problem but a little bit easy to understand. The problem is listening problem. The communicator speak very fast and I could not followed and catch up the word that he said. Besides, the same problem as task one is slang. I can’t listen clearly what the word that he say’s. And I still confuse about that. When I refer to the tape script and then I can understand. For me the passage is too simple to understand but when I was listening to the communicator it’s different and I think that the slang is my problem in my listening skills.

Actually, I don’t like to hear something in English because it hard to understand. Such as listen to English song or English movie. I can’t understand it. The slang is usually my problem. I think I should change my mind about this. After this I want to enjoy English song and movie. I hope when I done this, it can make me be better in my listening skills.

Based to my entire problem, I suggest to management department to think about it and solve this problem for the new student in the future when they have to take foundation class like me. So, if this problem settle I think that all of the student that have a listening problem can become the better than what they are.

In the dream

Dream ……I think all of us have our own dream. For me I’ve my own dream and I hope my dream become true one day. Talk about the task, when I entered the web side and I saw many title or topic to listen. I just saw one topic that really familiar and closed to me. It is ‘in the dream’. I like this topic and I hope that it is interesting to hear. It’s true.

It is about how dream make benefit to the dreamers.

Actually this is my first experience in this program. Usually, when I heard to the communicator and my emotion felt down because it hard to understand. May be, the slang are different between us and the communicator. The pronunciation is very different but I’ll try again and give all my attention to follow word by word. He spoke very fast and I can’t follow the word one by one because of it. I think I still not familiar with it. That’s why I felt like that. Finally I understand what the communicator tries to tell me. When I refer back to the tape script, I think they used a simple word and simple language but when they were spoken it different sound. In there I know that I learned a new thing that’s slang. Besides that, I’ve learned more vocabulary and new word that I never heard before. If I can’t understand some word I refer to the dictionary. It is so important for me when I’m studying English. I think I like this session because it trains me to understand the slang and the speaking skills. But I’m still confused about the differentiation between British slang and US slang. I think I want to study more about the slang and I want to be apart of the expert Malaysians that can speak English in both slang. I hope my experience could help me in my future.

Based to the topic, I really agree with David Crystal. I think who was listened it was agree with him too. Everyone can dream. Dream makes you be the best and try to get it. I hope all of our dreams become true one day.

Never stop dreaming because dream make you change your life but do not dream without do something to get your dream.

Task 1

Assalamu’alaikum and how are you today? Just now, I already listened Professor David Crystal recording. The title is about ‘Get a life’. Now, I want to told about my listening experience. First time when I heard the recording, I could not understood very well what Prof. David Crystal told about because he said very fast. Then, I tried again to listen for the second time. By that time, I could caught some word that he said but still not very understood. For the third time, I could quite understood. After that, I read the tapescript for the two times then I heard again the recording. I became more understood what he told about. From the listening experience, I found some new words that I did not understood such as ‘derogatory’ and ‘workaholic’. Then, I found for their meaning on dictionary. Below is the meaning of the two words above :
derogatory - expressing a lack of respect for, or a low opinion of something
workaholic - a person who lives work and does too much of it


Task 2

For the task 2, I have chosen another topic from the Professor David Crystal recording. The title is ‘cell’. The listening experience also same with task 1 listening experience but for the task 2, I listened the recording for three times only which two times before I read the tapescript. From the Professor David Crystal speech, I thought it easier to understood because his facts and words was familiar and quite simple and also I could guess it although not very understood. This assignment taught me the basic skills in listening and could knew the correct pronunciation of words. From this listening experience, I also found the new vocabulary in this recording then I found for their meaning on dictionary.
monastery – a place where men (monks) live in a religious community
prison – the building where criminals are kept as a punishment.
synchronise – to make something happen or work at the same time or speed

Assignment2

TASK1
The first topic that I listen is 'Get a life'. I had listened this topic for three time without read the tapescript. However, I can't understand Prof. David Crsytal's recording because his pronunciation was too fast and I don't familiar with his slang. But, after I read the tapescript, I can understand this topic about. While, some words are difficult for me to understand because i didn't see them before such as 'derogatory', 'jocular' and 'workaholic'. I had tried to find these words'meaning on dictionary. However, I can't find the word 'workaholic'. Therefore, I guese its meaning from the task. Althought this task is not long, I still need a few hours to understand it.

TASK2
The another topic that I listen is 'Bless'. I choose this topic because I familiar with this word. 'God bless you', I'm sure that people always use this words to greeting. I prefer like this topic than the topic before. I had listened this topic for a few times, but more of the part of this task I can't understand. Therefore, I have to read the tapescript and found some difficult words such as 'interjection' and 'indulgent'. The meaning of these words I guese are differ from meaning that I found on dictionary. Oh my god......I know I need more reading to improve my English. Anyway, I have some improvement in my listening skill from this Online Listening.

TASK 1;I've already finished to listen Prof.david Crystal site. As for me, I choose "CELL". I think it is so difficult to understand the words. It can improve our listening skill if we listen it for many times. It will be more easily to understand the topic. i can anderstand this speak,because this speak no has many word that i no understand.
i had listen for 3 time.
wires is something that join electrical things. It also is one of the descriptive words , like spmebody say to you "are you wired?" computers use wires connect to the internet. 'wired' meaning you are connected to the internet. now "wired" has been replaced by "wireless" . .
if I say, "are you wireless?" meaning "are you ready for me?"
some word i can no hear clearly because some speak is too fast. i well try to learn more about how to listen the fast speaking.

Task 1

I had listen to the topic in David Crystal website and I choose a topic about ‘ Euro ’ in this task. The words that he used in this topic are simple but I cannot determine what he saying. There are less difficult words such as ‘shove’. Meanwhile, the pronunciation is too fast and connected to each other. The point that I understand is the whole paragraph are say about the words ‘Euro’.

Task 2

The second topic that I had to be listen in this website is ‘In your dreams’. The second one is also quite similar in task 1 in their words. There are some sentences that I can’t determine their meaning without using a dictionary book such as ‘muttering’. We may understand more when we listen many times of this passage.

This recording titled “Netizen”. In my opinion, it more easily to understand because it used the simple word and we always found the word. It talks about the word “netizen”. It defines as a citizen of the internet, an internet citizen, netizen for short, somebody who lives their whole life there. I learn new vocabulary such as netizen and for its pronoun is netter or netties.

Besides, the word netiquette. The meaning of “netiquette” is the conventions which govern acceptable behavior when engaging in internet dialogue.

Amazing! It’s quite hard to understand what the recording says. I found many new words. For example, ‘rota system’ and ‘hotdesker’. The title for this recording is “hotdesking” by Professor David Crystal. It says that the “hotdesking” is the practice of sharing desks or workstations between office workers.

The people who do the "hotdesking" are called "hotdeskers".

After listen many times and read depend on the tapescript, I can understand more.

the topic i listen is TEXT
i no understand all of the speak, but i think i well understand more then 70%.
i listen for 3 time.
he talk about phone revolution. 5, 10 years ago cell phones are no exist.but now it is exist, people started using them to send messages to each other. So, we have the noun 'text' and the verb 'to text'. this mean to send message using mobile phone. noun 'texting'mean to taxt somebody. and 'text messaging' send messages to each other .texters mean a people who send a message.
thist is what i know when listen thist speak!!!

Firstly,for the first task,I choose 'wyswyg' as my topic.I choose it because the word 'wyswyg' make me interesting to know what is this topic about.....So,I opened it and tries to listened first without reading..I listened and listened until it was ended.I can't understood totally for the first time.So,I tries to listened again and again.But,his slang also make me difficult to understood it so when I listening again with task,I'm so happy because I can understood and know what he told about...Then,I try to listen again and again until I catch up all of this.He told about 'what you see is what you get'.It's mean for the 'wyswyg'.For this topic,I learn more new words like circumstances and accolade.

For the task 2,I choose 'Bless'.You know what is the meaning the world of the 'Bless'.Before this,we always use 'Bless' in the situation like word 'May Allah bless you' for the someone who want God to protect them.But,in this topic which I have listening,he use word of 'Bless' in the different situation.It's gave different meaning when use in another situation....So,from this topic,I also learn new meaning from the word 'Bless'.In this task,I also learn new word like indulgent.

Task 1

I choosed "Blog" as a first topic.Before I listened,I maked sure that no other sound allowed except from this recording.After that I closed my eyes and focused when recording started.For the first time I cannot clearly knew what it talked about.I tried about 4 times but it still difficult to understad.I maked another plan,the plan is when I did not understand I stopped the recording and listened again the sentence that i not understand.It was seems successful,I can understand more sentences.But, I not satisfied with this successful because not all words that I understand.So the final step,I read the article that I listened before.As a result,I found new words that I did not know.I tried to use "guess" technique and I thought I got their meanings.For example.I did not know the meaning of abbriviation from sentence "It's an abbriviation of web blog".After pressured my brain, I thought the meaning is contents or description.But not all words that I can guess like the meaning of "coinages" from sentence "there are even more coinages about to come,it seems to me.". Although I opened ditionary, I still cannot understand the meaning of sentence.In addition, I also learned how to use suitable intonation, where to stress voice and not.Another afford that I did was I tried to follow it slang.This all what I did in task 1.

Task 2

For task two,I choosed a topic "cell".I did same what I did in task 1.In this topic,I also got new words and learned that some word can be shorten like mobile phone to mobile,cellular phone to cell and synchronise to sync.Lastly, I wished you have a good live and thank you because you are the first English teacher that not hate me,thank you very much..

hai, see again , after finish for task 1 , we see again for task 2, for task 2 i choosen Thirty-something as my topic .
This phrase, ‘thirty-something’, it came in in the 1980s
referring to people of an unspecified age between 30 and
40. as ussually, like task 1, i still was using same way , cause it was the hardest to me for understood as fast as possible. here, i know, it was different between english language with others country slang. eventhought, it will take some time, it still can be done. for this topic , i got a new word , such as baby boom , it's mean personal moral standards. so , at last, i was hopefully, my effort this time for improve my english will acchive.

For task 1, I chose the topic “ Get a life ”. Firstly, I really try to listen to Professor David Crystal’s recording without read the tapescript. But, I found that I was not really understood what he said. Maybe I was not familiar with the US slang. So, I don’t catch the professor meaning. Therefore, I just read the tapescript and listen again. This time I really more understood the meaning of the recording. This topic is said to somebody that advise them to stop doing what the speaker considers boring and useless and live their life in a fuller and more interesting way. On the other hand, I was also learnt many new vocabularies in this topic such as ‘derogatory’, ‘dull’, ‘jocular’, and ‘workaholic’. To put it in a nutshell, I can’t really understand the recording without read the tapescript.

In task 2, the topic that I chosen was “ Phat ”. Sincerely, I wasn’t listening to professor’s recording first in this task. It was because I think I won’t understand the meaning of the recording if I’m not read the tapescript first. So, I read the tapescript for one time and then listen to the recording. As a result, I can easily to catch and understand the recording. In this topic also, I had learnt two new words that are ‘etymologies’ and ‘homophony’. The word ‘etymologies’ mean the study of the origin and history of words and their meanings. However, the word ‘homophony’ is mean two words which have the same sound but different from meaning. Besides that, I was also learnt that the word ‘phat’ and ‘fat’ were have the same sound but different from meaning which is homophony. The professor always emphasized this two words by saying ‘p-h-a-t’, not ‘f-a-t’.

ASSIGMENT 2....

Hi,everybody.... I like to listen Prof. David Crystal's recording. Why? It's because gave me different experience about listening. I chose one topic from this recording as a title 'IN YOUR DREAM' because it attrated me. I think this listening is very interesting although i didn't understand the very well. Because of didn't understand, i read the tapescript and listen again. I could hear clearly and at the same time i found a few words. There are circumstances, optimistic and muttering. I can learn more.. That's all for task 1.



'GET A LIFE'.... I interested in this topic for my task 2.. I didn't understand the whole topic but i try to find out the new words in the dictionary. After that I heard it again and again. This is my first time done online listening practice so that it's more different experience for me. I think this online listening is very useful to improve our listening skill. In addition, I also learn how to pronounce the words which I didn't know before.

Lastly, I want say thank to madam because teaching us during third semester. I hope our drama competition will get a good result. All the best for final exam. Bye bye...........

I like to listen it. But sometimes i can't listened clearly what are he talk about.hehehehehe. So, when i listened it i must to read first. When i read, i found new word like jocular. Task 2 (Wannabe)

'Wannabe' is same meaning to 'want to be'. So, i found new word to help me decreases word when i made summary when i listened it. Firstly, when i listened it i can't understanding what are he talk about. This is because the pronunciation is quick difficult to me to understand. Like task 1, i must read first to make me more understand it. I found some words is me do not know what are it meaning. The word is colloquial and sceptical.

So, I'm very enjoyed when listened this 2 tasks. It is not easy to understand because the pronunciation is quick difficult to me to understand it. But, i tries to understand it. Ya-ha!!!!

task 1:
Firstly,in task 1 I would like to share something about the listening of David Crystal's website. I think the listening is good to especially for student to learn more about English in grammar and vocabulary. In this website,the story is very easy to understand and I like it because its interesting to me. Beside that, I can improve my language and know more vocabulary when I read the story.
So, with online skill practice I can learn and improve my English language to be better than before.I try practice the listening that...then I excited to practice again...And from the online listening I can improve my listening,grammar and other....In listening Prof. David Crystal I choose one topic and it is " Get a life". When I listen about the topic, I think this topic is very interesting....And from listening the topic I get many new word or new vocabulary for such as derogatory, unfulfilled, existence and decades....I must study English every time to improve my English language.

TASK 1- Today I serve internet to search Prof. David Crystal's website. When I log on the website, I get more knowledge about listening & writing. I read more than one topic but the interesting one is 'GET A LIFE'. I enjoyed this topic very much because I understand it more than others. Before I read this topic I think get a life more about to offensive to somebody. Actually get a life have many meanings. It can be serious but usually jocular. It also can be used for instance to a workaholic or for anybody obsessed with something. The new words I have learned is 'derogatory' & 'offensive'. Derogatory means exspressing a lack of respect for or a low opinion. Offensive means unpleasant. That all my opinion about this topic. It's improve my listening and I hope this website can be help me to improve in my English also.

Task 2- Now I want to give my opinion to the next topic. The topic I choose is 'IN YOUR DREAM'. Everybody have a dream. I also have my dream but dream have a lot of meaning. Dream is a series of events or pictures which happen in your mind while you sleep. For example, I had a strange dream last night. It also something that you want very much to happen, although it is not likely. In my dream, I want to get a good job after I finished my studies. I want to help my family exspecially my parents. Task 1

First of all, I choose ‘in your dream’ as my first task assignment. This is a quiet difficult title that I want to share with you all. All members have their dream right? But, the speaker said its not just dream when you sleeping every night, its come with many possible meaning when DREAM word become
‘ in your dream’. Its could be a word come from a driver when he see a clear road, words from part of movies and some more. Lastly, there are some words I cannot hear clearly such as circumstances, reverie, and muttering. That’s all about this title listening.



Task 2

Second title that I choose is ‘wicked’. I ‘m very excited to say that speaker had done very well. He presented me the new word, wicked. I say not the word I ‘am very proud, but he told me how the word comes in English vocabulary. History said that word are brought by unites state’s black slang or Britain in the late 1980s.he added that teenagers as future generation bring wicked which means ‘good’.
However, I also found many new words likes ambiguous, merry and splendid. I think this is suitable title to all members to listening themselves because its come with more knowledge, so don’t forget to find it for yourself experience in listening.

First of all, I want to say thanks a lot for you because give your effort while teach in our class. Ok, for task one, after log in the Professor David Crystal website, I choose the title “wysiwyg”, because it sounds so strange, I listened what he talked without saw the typescript first. His intonation and style are quite difficult to understand, after read the typescript given, I found new words like WYSIWYG = what you see is what you get and an accolade = praise for or recognition of great achievement. After understood that’s meaning I understand what he said but not all of that. Certain passage I guess the meaning. This task also tells about Britney Spears that include the word “WYSIWYG” into her lyric song.

For task two, I choose the title “the turner prize shortlist”. I don’t know why I choose this title, maybe its looks weird but for me, this title was very interesting. When I listened to this dialog first, I was blurring because it involve two people with different art of speaking and their language also quite difficult to understand. However, after listened three times, I understand certain part in this dialog. After that I looked the typescript and I found a lot of difficult words like drenched = to cause (a person) to be wet all over, evocative = memories or feeling, evokes = to produce an effect in the mind and lastly camouflage = pattern. Finally the dialog between William and Rachel not difficult of all and I understood a lot of sentence there. ASSIGNMENT 2

For task 1

I chose "cell" for my task 1. This task describe about mobile phone. From began to the ended, I just heard Professor talked and talked. I listened it without see the tapescript. As a result, I only heard he talked in english but I didn't understand for a whole task. It is quite difficult to hear clearly for every words, maybe because of his slang. After that, I read the tapescript and listen again. Actually the words in this task is not very difficult. I can understand it very well after I had read for two times. Monastery is a new word that I found from this task. Monastery is means building in which monks live as a community (cf convent, nunnery). I looked up this word in the dictionary. In my opinion, online listening practise is more useful for me because it is repeatable. I can listened it again and again and learn how to pronounce the words. Besides that, I believe that our listening can be improved through this online listening practice. Sometimes I cannot listen and understand it very well because I admit that I seldom listen to the english song and the news. This online listening is quite interesting and I hope this program can convince you all enjoy it.



For task 2

I chose "bless" for my task 2. I heard for five times, but I still cannot understand for a whole task. However, I could understand a half of this task. I think it is better if compare to task 1. After I read the tapescript, I found new words that I have never seen. There are ironic, hint, snuggling and indulgent. So I looked up in the dictionary.

Ironic is means using or expressing irony.

Hint is means indirect suggestion.

snuggling is means get close (to sb) for warmth, comfort or affection.

Indulgent is means allows oneself / somebody to have whatever one/he likes or wants.



In my opinion on this online listening practice, I learn how the pronounciation of each words and at the same time can also improve my listening. This morning I had read more than 2 task, I found a lot of new words that I have never seen. So that I looked up in the dictionary. I can know more vocabulary from this way. I can't understand very well When I listened for task 1 and task 2 without read the tapescript. This is because I seldom listen to news and speak to others. Online listening practice gave me a really different experience in listening. Furthermore, this program also convince me to listen more english news. I realized that always listen to the english song and news might improve our listening.

my second assignment (task 1 blog and task 2 )

First of all, after trying so many time in different computers, finnaly i can heard david crystal's task. So for my task 1, i'm choose the 'blog'.



Task 1



After listened to the david crystal, i can't understand every single words that he said. But after listened it again and again, i start understand it. And more understand after read the task. Eventhough i understand the task, there have some words that i cannot understand, such as, abbreviation, coinages, and blogarrhoea. After check the dictionary, i found the meaning of this all words which is :



Abbreviation : 1. The act or product of shortening.
2. A shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent
the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC for United
States Marine Corps.





Coinages : 1. The right or process of making coins.

For the meaning of "logarrhoea", i cannot find the meaning. Eventhough i'm using the online dictionary. So, i hope that madam can explain the meaning of this word to me because i think not only me that want to know it, but other friend also want to know it. Thanks madam :)..

For the second task, i'm choosing 'bless' because i like this word. For my religion, this words using to greet someone, such as 'may God bless you'. For this task, when i listened it for first time, i can't understand it. As the task 'blog', every single words that david crystal said, is hard to understand. Maybe because of his slang. But after listen it for second time, i started to understand it and more understand it after i read the task. Eventhough i understand it. as the first tak, there have some words that i cannot understand which are 'parliament', 'distinctive', 'interjection', and ' indulgent '. Here is the meaning of this words after checking the dictionary.

From this task 1 and task 2, i learn some new words. Besides that, i learn how the pronounciation of each words and listening better.

Hi,my name is Chee Khen and I come from Teluk Intan,Perak.Very nice have chance to study at UKM and met you all.Actually,English is a subject that I'm frightened since I at primary school.I even can't understand what are my teacher talking about in English when I was in form 5. In last semester, I felt sad because I can't take EST,but now I think study Foundation English is better for me.I like my Foundation English lesson because my madam is very nice and smile always.I can follow and understand the lesson because madam's pronunciation is very clear and laugh. The lesson sang the song of "Flying Without Wings" is deep impression for me. It is a really enjoyable way to learn English. My classmates are very funny and helpful, they help me a lot in class and outside the class. Besides that, Longman Online have help me to improve my English. I like this exercises which is more attractive compare with the exercises on books. "The Return Of Sherlock Holmes" is a very interesting story book. I like this story more compare with another story book like "Dragonheart" that I have read.In project presentation, I was disappointed with my performance with my performance especially in pronunciation. Anyway, I want to thank my group members as well as Umair and Yeo Hee. I'm glad when cooperate with them. While, I'm proud with performance of "Power Ranger"(Chew Siang). She is quite smart. Pitchue and Mohd. Shah are stayed beside my room, I hear Hafiz and them still practice their project presentation even it is 2:30 a.m. I proud with them too.Third semester is quite short and the lesson will finish soon. But i know i still have to improve my English. Last, I hope that we all can take photos together as a memory.

Do you remember me?? I’m wahida @ nurul.. this is my second assignment. For task one, I opened the Professor David Crystal website and chose to hear the topic “In Your Dream”. I just heard what he talked without saw the tapescript. It is quite difficult to understand his slang. However, after I read the tapescript given and listened again, I could understood it very well. I found a new word from this topic. The word is ‘reverie’. The meaning of 'reverie' is 'dream'.

For task two, I chose the topic ‘Get a Life’…hmm, that time I felt easier than before to understand Prof. David Crystal words. Maybe, it is because I had heard his slang before. Then, I read the tapescript given and listened again. Wow, I found that I really understood what he talked about. There are two words I never seen before. They are ‘derogatory’ and ‘workaholic’. 'Derogatory' means 'insulting' while 'workaholic' means 'person who works obsessively'. This project was help me improved my listening. I like it!! Okey, I have nothing to say anymore. In task two,i think ,i really enjoy listening a english.I can't bore or feel sleepy.I have a lot of spirit to improve in english especially in listening.In this topic,i find a new vocabulary like 'ineffectual',indesive' and 'etymology'.i never hear, this words before this.I think it is first time,really worse right.oh no!.This topic explain what is 'wuss'.Actually,it means ineffectual person,indesive, or weak.The words seems to be developing.Now,i already know a briefly about 'wuss'.Next time,i will tries to listen,listen and listen again,what type which involve a english language.Finally,i can say,i feel happy and excited in listening.Thank you for foundation class and madam Syarifah Zurina.

About this topic, Many Americans like to say "God bless you" to the person after he or she sneezes. But not for Muslims, we prefer says "praise to Allah" when someone sneezes. In task 1, i would like to choice "in Your dream" as my topic. There are two words which i cannot to understand likes muttering and circumstances As me know, the dream is connected with our own "reality". Dream was happens very general in our life. I like to choose ‘GET A LIFE’ as a topic for my task one .This part tells me about LIFE. As we know, planning our life is important to be better in our future. Sometimes we need to sacrifice to get the best things in life. In this topic it shows how to use the times in our life with doing something that we can enjoy. Don’t waste your life to be empty and dull. Sometimes our life is too serious and sometimes it is funny and full of joy. There are three new words that I do not understand the meaning such as derogatory, jocular and existence. Derogatory mean showing bad behavior or a bad quality. Jocular mean funny and existence mean the state of being. It is easy for me when find the meaning in the oxford dictionary which is second edition. Lastly, I enjoy listen this topic.



TASK 2

I like to choose ‘NOT’ as a topic for my task two. This part tells me about NOT that be used in our day life. Not is use for negative statement. It’s an unusual usage, putting the ‘not’ at the end, instead of in the middle. Not is use when we not agree with others or we don’t like the things that give ourselves to be angry. I found the new vocabulary in this article such as abbreviation, blondes and negate. Abbreviation means a shortened form of a word. Blondes mean a woman who is blond and negate mean negative. I’m only familiar with the word negative and negate is new vocabulary for me. But to understand easily I listen to other sentences, so that I can assume the meaning. Lastly I like this topic and enjoy it.

I want to share with you all about "How to improve our English language".

1. Remember that learning a language is a gradual process, it does not happen overnight.

2. Define your learning objectives early.What do you want to learn and why?

3. Make learning a habit. Try to learn something every day. It is much better to study (or read, or listen to English news) 10 minutes each day than to study for 2 hours once a week.

4. Remember to make learning a habit! If you study each day for 10 minutes English will be constantly in your head. If you study once a week, English will not be as present in your mind.

5. Choose your materials well. You will need reading, grammar, writing, speaking and listening materials

6. Vary your learning routine. It is best to do different things each day to help keep the various relationships between each area active. In other words, don't just study grammar.

7. Find friends to study and speak with. Learning English together can be very encouraging.

8. Choose listening and reading materials that relate to what you are interested in. Being interested in the subject will make learning more enjoyable,thus more effective.

9. Relate grammar to practical usage. Grammar by itself does not help you use the language. You should practice what you are learning by employing it actively.

10. Move your mouth! Understanding something doesn't mean the muscles of your mouth can produce the sounds. Practice speaking what you are learning aloud. It may seem strange, but it is very effective.

11. Be patient with yourself. Remember learning is a process,speaking a language well takes time. Communicate! There is nothing like communicating in English and being successful. Grammar exercises are good.

Penguin Readers

First of all, want to greet hai to madam and everyone. Well today in class we doing unit 7. We were doing the reading comprehension and i found many new words and learning about how to make correct sentence. I also learning on how to use the right linking words.

Beside that, madam give us to see our marks for the penguin readers just for a while and i did'nt get fullmark :( ... Maybe because i'm write there too little or i'm not explain 'what is about'... sobsob... But nevermind, next time i'll do better :)

Before I mention my achievement in learning English, I would like to say thank you very much to madam for change my perception in learning English. For your information, before I took this Foundation English class, I always afraid to come to other English classes. Sometimes, I lost my mood if I had English class for that day and became so quiet in the English class. I felt so afraid…afraid to speak, give opinion, present and some more.. Because I thought I’m going to do wrong..
But, when I saw madam at the first time, everything is going to change… the way you teach, your face and your voice make me more comfortable to study English. I haven’t afraid anymore. Moreover, I like to go to your class. I don’t want to miss your classes even for one day.
Now, I want to tell you my performance in reading.. Alhamdulillah, I’m okay in reading. Nowadays, it is going better because madam always told us to read more articles. Sometimes, she want us to read loudly in the class. This activity made me more confident and excited to improve myself. But I’m really bad in writing, I don’t know when I want to put past tense or present tense in my sentences.. This articles that you are reading is also bad. Maybe, you all will think that ‘ how bad wahida is’..but I didn’t care anymore,hehe.. as long as I had tried to do my best..Maybe my limited vocabulary made me hard to write better. I’ll never give up and try to find more English term. This class was help me found new vocabulary that I never found before.
My listening and speaking was improved by madam, Longman online, class activities and my friends. I really appreciate it. Actually, I really like speaking although I’m bad in it. It is enjoy and funny. I need to speak in my presentation, so I like it. From presentation, I can learn ‘ soft skill’ that needed when I’m going to work in the future. But I can’t present very well on class presentation because my voice like want to disappear. I’m sorry for that..

You can call me,yanie. Now i’m student at University Kebangsaan Malaysia. Before this i’m student at matriculation Kuala Pilah.
Now,english so important to study in science from the primary school until at university and also to get job. From the primary school, I don’t like English subject because in English class I’m felt frightened if teacher ask me,I don’t know how to answerin English. After spm,I was attenda English course to improve my English. There, I was learned from the began how to speak and read in English in true way. After I took that course,I felt more brave than before to speak in English.
In muet,it quite difficult to answer because it words is high English language. I think,I want to take muet again,but at UKM, we just take foundation English to get a graduate. So, no I’m taking foundation English class. I like this class because teacher who teach me is a kind, funny and good teacher.I’m easy to understand what teacher speak in English because she using easy word to understand and her pronunciation is so clear. This class can improve my English better. I also get many useful information in this class. I like process of studying who using by teacher.

Achievement in reading

Reading is the most important to find out everything and to find a lot of knowledge. Usually, I’m not getting into trouble with reading, but my grammar needs improvement. During the foundation class, the teacher allowed me to read in class. It can help me to improve my grammar and the same time my reading can be faster than usual. Now, I have a book for practicing reading. I read my essay though a few time before answered some questions. Now, I was enjoyed when reading.

Achievement in writing

Writing skill is important to write a letter to an organization to find a job. Before this, I had problems with reading and writing since I was at school. But now I find that the statement in English is easy to understand if we have a lot of English vocabulary. Beside that’s an exercise on phrasal verbs is intended to help me learn and practice English in the future. I have an experience and skill to writing summary of a story. Maybe for the first time, that is very difficult but it not really. To write a good summary, I’m just trying to understand what the story telling us about.

Achievement in listening

Listening is also the important part of learning English. Usually, I always getting into trouble with listening. It is very difficult to understand. I can’t understand with someone who speaks in English quite fast. Sometimes I was confused with vocabulary items and encountering problems when using a word which either looks or sounds almost the same as another word. During foundation class, by slow I can follow them and try to understand what of their talking about and know how to compare this vocabulary items. Now I have a skill to find differences in their meaning.

Achievement in speaking

Speaking means talking or say things. In learning of English, we need to speak. Before this I cannot to speak in English very well. But now, I really like to speak in English. I know and be able to speaking correctly without making a mistake in language and pronunciation. I was speaking word by word so that is not out of the topic. Besides I can verify which one are pronoun, verb and adverb/adjectives. These words are important to make an essay or reports.

Achievement in vocabulary

Doing an exercise is a good practice to excellent in learning English. An exercise also a method to increase my English vocabulary. Many idioms are difficult to understand from the meaning of individual word. In our class, we learn how to fine the meaning of the difficult item. Maybe some of us were using a dictionary but I have another skill, use context clues to guess the meaning. In exam, we cannot to use the dictionary so we need to guess logically the meaning of the object. There have four several types of context clue are example clue, definition clue, the contrast clue and the experience clue. I think this is a way to settle my problem in English vocabulary. So far, my English vocabulary was added than usual, I means before this class proceed.


Achievement in making presentations

Presentation means a formal talk that you give to a group of people. During the foundation class, we are divided by seven groups and each group contain around three or four peoples. Each group have to give a short presentation on a title of we are choice. In presentation, I’m tried to present my material in an interesting ways. Learning English presented no problem to me. Before this, I didn’t have the confident to present in front but now, I should feel confidence about my own abilities. I stepped confidently in front and began to make presentation. All the skills I get when I was learn at class.

Achievement in participating discussions

I spend time to discuss together with my group members to finish our presentation work. After join this class, i feel more confident to participate in discussion. Next, i like all activities in my class but i like most is when madam told us to read the paragraph in the class. It help me to become more confident to comunicate in front of my friends.

I like all the activities that had been done in this class during this six weeks period. I was like playing a game and quiz activities. I like this activity because it can help me easy to known my new friends. Besides of this, I also like the listening to a song activity.

My name is Ruwaida binti Rosdi. My friends called me waida or wai... Its very simple name,right?..hehe.. I am a pure math student at Science and Technology Faculty. Before this, I’m study at Malaka Matriculation College,Melaka… Nowadays,we know that English language is very important because it is International language. So, I agree with UKM because provides Foundation English subject for students got band 1 and band 2 in MUET like me. So, I want to mention about my skill and performance in reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, making presentations and participating discussion after I take this subject.
Firstly, about reading. I likes reading. I think my reading is not bad. It is because I can read with right pronounsation but sometimes i’m not sure. How about my writing? I think my writing is not very good but better than before I take this subject. My grammar not very good n I must improve it. My skill and performance about listening is very good. I can understand what people say. But sometimes I can’t understand if I don’t know the meaning of the words.
Besides that,my performance for speaking not very bad. I can improve it so that it become more better. I think two skill and performance are difficult to me ,there are writing and speaking. Its because my vocabulary is limited. So, I must very hardworking start from now to improve my vocabulary. My performance about making presentation is not bad. For next time, I must more confident and not shy if I want to improve my skill in making presentation.
For my performance in participating discussions, I think its really good because I can share many ideas with my group members. Assalamualaikum…! My name is Liyana bt Jamaan. I’m from Kuala Lumpur. I want to learn English because I have difficulty in speaking English fluently and I would be better off if I could speak good English. Sometimes, I feel ashamed of my broken English. As a student, I want to improve my English. So that, I can do my homework very well besides can more understand when I read English book, magazines and newspapers.

About my English lecturer? Madam Sharifah Zurina. Hmm…that I know, she don’t like student call her teacher but I think somebody that teach people is called ‘teacher’. It is not mean a teacher refers to primary school teachers only. Okay, never mind! Madam! If you are reading my comments now, I hope that you are not blame and angry with me. It’s only my opinions. Hehe….Smile (“,). I like my English lecturer because she is very funny, cheerful, kind, friendly, understanding and also talkative. She made my classmates and I laugh so that’s the lessons in the class not very boring. Do you agreed with me, my friends? Sometimes, my English lecturer was strict in the classroom. I think it’s okay because it made the students become disciplined to the point they do not disturb the lessons, finish for their homework, puncture to the time when coming to the class, be a responsible and else. They will have to learn to sit quietly are respectfully while the teacher explain a lesson. If the students are allowed to do as they please, a teacher maybe lose control of the class. As a human, we always forget so somebody must always remembered them!

Now, we talk about my achievements in learning English. I thought all English book made me so boring but when my English teacher gave me a book about investigation title, The Return of Sherlock Holmes made me very interested and want to know what happen next. Then, when I went to library to borrow another book, I think all Penguin books very interesting. Maybe, it’s only for story book not the books about fact, news, history and education. Hehe….!

About writing, I still not good in that when I always made a mistakes in grammar although how many times I was learn it but I still confuse when I want to use it in writing. I think from Longman Online Program made me more understand about grammar but that not have enough time to explore all about at the Cyber Library. I hope for the next if can, student can get the Longman CD-Rome English for their reference and revision or can do the Longman exercise not only at Cyber Library or student can get the notes from lecturer. Others, maybe I must read many English book not only about story book but also many book about fact, news, science and else so that I can get many ideas and information to improve my writing.

I think my listening learning also become good and improve from the Longman Online Program. It can improve my pronunciation I also not good in speaking because when I say, it heard not very clearly and confidently. Actually, I like to speak when reading. I use it as a pronunciation practice and make me more understand and focus what I’m read about. From the reading comprehension, answer the question and discussion with lecturer, I can know many new vocabulary.

Making presentation is good as a practice in speech in front of many people and learn how to organize their project work in group to be prepared to present the best of what they have. Feeling nervous? Yes, of course I feel it when speech in front of many people. It is okay if I feel little nervous. It help to keep me alert. Public speaking is one of the many activities that can practice us to speech.

That have many activities that involved participating discussions like a make question, discuss about comprehension and else. It is an opportunity to exchange information between each other. One of the activity that I like is competition inter group. Although my group not won but I’m very enjoyed with this games because it can make our mind become active. The activities that involved such as rearranged the letters to formed words, made many words from the letters that have been given, rearranged words to made sentences and else.

I have an idea for other activities that we can do in class or maybe it just a suggestion for the future class activities such as :
i) an exercise about translation from Malay sentences to English

ii) make / continue a sentences from the keywords
e.g : Pn Siti – business woman – batik shop – Hotel Tiara – sell batik cloth, dress………also local handicraft

iii) Story-Building Activity
-A student shall start a story / incident with a sentence. The next student will have to add something more and make it interesting and so on. The last student shall end the story.
e.g : I heard a knock on the front door……….

iv) Whispering Game
e.g : Divide the class into two or three teams. The tutor whispers a massage to the first person of both Group A and Group B. The game only starts when both players know the massage. The team which can repeat the massage to the next player in his / her group successively until the last player gets the massage. The team which can repeat the massage first and correctly receives a point.

Finally, thank you to Madam Sharifah because taught me English and always gave some advices to us and also to all my friend for your cooperation. I would remember all our memories in our Foundation English class as long as I still life. Remember me always and may Allah bless you…!(“,)

I'm so happy that you are reading a lot of the Penguin readers. Yes, you're right. I was quite disappointed when I found out that our friends in class were not reading and making use of the collection of Penguin Readers in the library. The Penguin Readers is purposely written in such a way so that you can understang them and improve your vocabulary. It also increases your confidence because once you have read and understood it, you'll feel good because you have completed reading it in a short time and understood it as well. So, you will want to read some more. I hope you can convince our other friends in class.
